Handwritten letter from N.D. Pendleton to Bishop William F. Pendleton.
Pendleton is forwarding W.F.P. a letter from Mr. Kendig about the conduct of Mr. Whitehead during his time in Renovo. It seems that relations between Kendig and Whitehead became strained, and eventually Kendig wrote a letter of complaint to Mr. Synnestvedt. Before the letter could be sent, Whitehead found it and read it before turning it back over to Kendig. Whitehead’s reasoning was that he could not afford to have his...

Pendleton recounts his recent trip to the Erie circle. He preached on Sunday to a congregation of 37 and administered Holy Supper to 25. He attended a doctrinal class at the house of Mr. Glenn and gave Holy Supper to Mrs. McDonald in her home. He was impressed by all the work done for the Church in Erie by Dr. and Mrs. Cranch, and he comments, “It would require a very efficient minister to make much of an improvement.”...

Pendleton was glad to learn that Gilbert Smith will be sent to Erie. He has written to inform Dr. Cranch according to W.F.P.’s suggestion. Pendleton would like to be sent a copy of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision on the Kramph will case. Mr. Acton and Mr. Odhner both voiced opposition to Pendleton leaving Pittsburgh for a position in Bryn Athyn, but Pendleton informed them that he has declined the offer.

Pendleton has been considering W.F.P.’s invitation to visit Bryn Athyn. In order for Beatrice to leave, Ora would need to stay home from school to look after the family. As for Pendleton, he is dealing with several unusual expenses right now, and traveling at this time does not seem wise. However, Pendleton’s children are always hoping to spend the summer in Bryn Athyn, and Pendleton hopes to make this happen sometime in...

Pendleton reflects that he plans to remain in Pittsburgh for a long time as “each passing year makes a radical change less likely.” Regarding his health, Pendleton has been exercising on the tennis court at his doctor’s recommendation, and he has been feeling much better as a result. Pendleton writes that he plans to let Ora’s French professor, with whom he has formed a friendly relationship, perform an examination along...

Handwritten letter from N.D. Pendleton to Bishop William F. Pendleton. Pendleton believes Easter will be the best time for a trip South. He cannot go now as Christmas is approaching and the people in Pittsburgh are “restless” after his recent absence from the pulpit. Pendleton must also be present in Pittsburgh in January for the Society’s annual meeting. He mentions that he enjoyed his recent visit to Bryn Athyn, and he sends love to all.

Pendleton is planning a trip south, and he hopes W.F.P. will take his place in Pittsburgh until he returns. In case W.F.P. cannot stay the entire time, Pendleton suggests Mr. Acton or Homer (Synnestvedt). Pendleton reports that there is opposition in the Pittsburgh society to the cost of the addition they are planning to the present Church building. However, more adequate accommodations are needed, and the majority is in...

Pendleton met with his committee last night about a potential trip south. The committee was unanimously against it. They feel he has been absent too much over the past year with his regular trips to Erie, and this has been “injurious” to the Society. Pendleton states, “I left the meeting feeling that there was nothing to do but to give up the Erie work, and I place my resignation in your hands in the hope that you will be...

Pendleton will read aloud W.F.P.’s most recent letter at the next Committee meeting as presenting W.F.P.’s position may “bring about a change of sentiment.” At their last meeting, the Committee was unanimously against Pendleton leaving the pulpit for a southern trip. However, they did not take an official “vote of refusal.” Despite an especially “affectionate response to spiritual instruction” over the past year,...

Pendleton read W.F.P.’s last letter aloud at the last Committee meeting. The members were asked whether they approved of Pendleton’s resignation from his work with the Erie Circle and what they thought of his proposed trip South. The general consensus was that they did not mind Pendleton leaving for special services on occasion, but they were unhappy with him leaving regularly for Erie because of the effect of his absence...
