Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Homer Synnestvedt in Pittsburgh, PA, USA.
Pendleton has received Synnestvedt’s last letter regarding his possible relocation to Toronto as the society’s new Pastor. Pendleton writes, “If your mind is interiorly made up to stay in Pittsburgh I do not see that there is any call for you to place yourself in a position to be persuaded to do what you think you ought not to do. In the matter of persuasion or rather non-persuasion I am an old fashioned...

Pendleton has received Synnestvedt’s telegram. He will wait for the accompanying letter before communicating to Toronto Synnestvedt’s decision regarding the pastorate. Pendleton also inquires whether Synnestvedt would like to work with theolog Allan Gill over the summer. As Synnestvedt has expressed interest in Gill in the past, Pendleton has told Gill to write to Synnestvedt regarding summer arrangements....

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Homer Synnestvedt in Pittsburgh, PA, USA.
Pendleton regrets that he does not have much time to answer letters these days, but he hopes to offer good advice in response to Synnestvedt’s most recent letter. He writes, “We ministers need a long long patience, plus an abounding supply of good will. We must suffer all things in pursuit of the end we have in view.” Pendleton suggests Synnestvedt have Alan Gill arrive early and fill the pulpit in Pittsburgh...

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Homer Synnestvedt. Pendleton acknowledges Synnestvedt’s letters of Feb. 13th and 17th. Pendleton agrees that the General Church will have trouble finding teachers for its schools next year, but he does not have a solution at this time. Both Pittsburgh and Toronto will have teaching positions to fill next year. Back in Bryn Athyn, things are now relatively quiet after the excitement of the February ministers’ meetings.

Pendleton has not kept up on his correspondence as he has been “in the hands of the grippe.” He hopes the meetings in Pittsburgh went well and that the changes they made to the Church organizational system are not too radical. He explains he is not opposed to governance changes so long as they “recognize and admit of the carrying out of our essential doctrine of Church government.” Pendleton is also...

Pendleton has received Synnestvedt’s letter of March 15th with the enclosed report of the Organization Committee. He comments, “I am especially glad to note that the committee after considerable research was confirmed in the finding that the church government as we have it, is founded on the principles revealed in the Writings. This is an excellent result and should have a stabilizing influence.” Pendleton is...

Pendleton was pleased to see from Synnestvedt’s letter of March 25th that the Pittsburgh society meeting to go over the report of the Organization Committee yielded favorable results. He was, however, distressed to hear about the Boggess family. He writes, “What can we do? In such an affair one must, I think, exercise charity by regarding all possible extenuating circumstances. But this at best is but a...

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Homer Synnestvedt in Pittsburgh, PA, USA.
Pendleton has just received Synnestvedt’s last letter. He advises Synnestvedt to call a meeting of his pastoral council, followed by a society meeting, and present them with his resignation. If they accept his resignation, Synnestvedt should write to Pendleton to officially accept his offer of a teaching position in Bryn Athyn. Pendleton will then authorize the Pittsburgh society to meet again to decide who...

In response to Synnestvedt’s last letter, Pendleton writes that Karl (Alden) is not, strictly speaking, on the list of potential new pastors for the Pittsburgh Society. This is because he is absorbed by his work in Bryn Athyn and has stated he would not go to Pittsburgh if called by the society. However, if the Pittsburgh Society is set on having him, Pendleton thinks there may be a chance he could be...

Pendleton thanks Synnestvedt for his account of the meeting that was held in Pittsburgh to discuss who their next pastor will be. Although Pendleton would have preferred to have the question of the Pittsburgh pastorate settled before the upcoming Assembly, he thinks the two week delay they decided on was advisable. In Bryn Athyn, George (DeCharms) was ordained into the third degree of the priesthood.
