Processing Information

The papers of Rev. William Henry Benade consist of approximately seven linear feet of correspondence, manuscripts and ledgers, mostly relating to his work in the New Church.  The correspondence existed in at least two different organizational systems, and some correspondence not organized at all.  In 2011, the Paul Carpenter Fund provided a grant to process Benade's correspondence.  It was determined by the archivist (Gregory Jackson) that since Rev. Benade was a key figure in the establishment of the General Church and the Academy of the New Church that item level processing of the correspondence was justified.  It was reasoned that the research value of the collection would be greatly increased if the correspondence followed only one form of organization.  It is not known who (perhaps Benade's widow, Katherine) had organized or re-organized the letters in different systems.  A project archivist, Molly Cronlund, was trained in the used of this archives information system (Archon) and given the task of entering a summary of each letter into the system.  The first segment of the project was completed over the summer and fall of 2011.  This resulted in the completion of approximately 95% of the arrangement and 20% of the description of the Benade correspondence.  The work was continued by another project archivist, Cary Scott Summers, who completed the arrangement and description of the Benade correspondences between July 2012 and May 2014.
