Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Fred E. Waelchli, 1915-08-03
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Fred E. Waelchli in Rosthern, Canada. Pendleton has received Waelchli’s encouraging letter sent from Chaplin. He feels that Waelchli’s mission in the Canadian Northwest will be “crowned with great success.” Pendleton reports that Miss Beekman has resigned from the General Church and has left the New Church entirely. She has become Catholic and renounced Swedenborg as a “mere amateur in theology.” Pendleton writes, “Any further comment by me will hardly be necessary, except perhaps to say that there is here the appearance at least of a great personal spiritual tragedy. On the other hand, there has been all along, with many of us, an obscure feeling that there was a subtle if undefinable difference between her New Churchmanship and that of others who accept the Divine Authority.” He believes that while her resignation was a personal choice, “. . . certainly we must see the hand of Providence in it to free the Church.” He now sees the way clearing for a return to normal in Bryn Athyn. Names mentioned: Miss (Lilian Grace) Beekman, (Emanuel) Swedenborg
