Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Fred E. Waelchli in Rosthern, Canada. Pendleton reports that the Bishop (W. F. Pendleton) enjoyed reading Waelchli’s letters of July 14th and 22nd and is encouraged by the favorable outlook for the General Church in the Canadian Northwest. The Bishop was pleased that Waelchli was able to work alongside Convention theolog Mr. Zacharias for the benefit of the Church. However, he agrees with Waelchli that a non-violent protest of the grounds of individual freedom may be in order if the conference of Canadian New Churchmen decides to join with Convention. In reference to this potential conflict, Pendleton writes, “For though they will not see it, still it is a fact that we do not want to gain control of Church organizations nor to unduly extend our power, but simply to have and to hold that which of spiritual right belongs to us, that is, those who are with us in the thought and affections of the Church. These in fact belong to us and we to them by the higher right of spiritual consanguinity. . . This is the true spirit of Church Extension as we know it, but unfortunately it is not the spirit attributed to us by our opponents.” Pendleton shares news of Fred Gyllenhaal’s travels in India where he met with Professor Bhatt and his followers in Bombay. Gyllenhaal received a warm welcome and preached for 250 Brahmins at Bhavanagar. He also celebrated June 19th and administered Holy Supper. There has been some conflict with the English Conference over the General Church’s activities in India, partially because Mr. Alden included the Kramph Will Case in the New Church literature he sent to Professor Bhatt. Pendleton has received word that the American visitors to Lausanne are doing good work for the Church amongst the followers of Paster Byse and the colony of Mauritians. Mr. Iungerich has succeeded in bringing Mr. Deltenre and Mr. Hussenet closer together. Pendleton concludes, “From all quarters good news comes in of the activities of the General Church.” Names mentioned: Mr. (John) Zacharias, Mr. (John) Hamm, Fred Gyllenhaal, Mr. (S. J.) Patel, Mr. (Herbert N.) Morris, Professor (Manishankar Ratnajee) Bhatt, Mr. (William Hyde?) Alden, Kramph, Mr. (Eldred) Iungerich, Pastor (Charles) Byse, Mr. (Ernst) Deltenre, Mr. (Ferdinand) Hussenet
