Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson, 1934-04-26
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton asks Tilson to convey his congratulations to Wynne Acton on his ordination into the second degree. Pendleton discusses the letter written by Mr. Bjorck to Tilson and the ongoing Hague controversy. He writes, “The differences between us are, indeed, of a most serious nature, and I can not see the means of reconciling them, and certainly we can not adopt a compromise. As to whether we can continue to live in the same house – this must await a clear indication of Providence, i.e., one that is decisive.” He continues, “This I say in answer to your second letter of March 30th, in which you suggest that I give some thought to an application of the law concerning the handling of disturbances in the church. That law must, indeed, be applied in all cases of need, but with a wise discretion as to the mode and manner. If not, we shall be guilty, not only of precipitate action, but of adding to the confusion, and also possibly of alienating some who would otherwise hold with us.” He concludes, “There are a number here who regard themselves as followers of the new doctrine. Their state is largely emotional, and to some extent apparently based on former complaints. These at least should be given time to cool off; some have already done so, with good results.” Names mentioned: Wynne Acton, Mr. (Albert) Bjorck
