Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton has received Tilson’s letters of August 11th and September 11th along with Miss Greenwood’s report of the British Assembly. Responding to Tilson’s letter of August 11th, he writes “I rejoice in your firmness in standing for Academy principles, and take no stock in the effort to differentiate your position from that held here in Bryn Athyn. Certainly we have all stated our views, each in his own way, but this is no excuse for making an imaginary division between us.” In answer to Tilson’s letter of September 11th with Assembly report, Pendleton states, “It is, of course, rather ‘smart’ to follow the cry that we here in Bryn Athyn do not ‘understand’ The Hague teachings, although some of those so saying hold that they themselves do not agree with those teachings in certain fundamentals. It would be the same, of course, if they claimed for their intellectual penetration, a definite superiority. However, this sort of thing is well nigh inevitable. . . Ultimately each one will go his own way.” After returning from Indian Lake, Pendleton spent a week in Bryn Athyn attending school opening exercises before departing to Pittsburgh for the Assembly. He plans to visit Toronto and Kitchener next week. Names mentioned: Mrs. (Beatrice Walton Childs) Pendleton, Miss (Mabel Beatrice) Greenwood
