Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton was glad to hear from Tilson in his own writing, as this indicates that his health has improved. He was also glad to hear that Wynne Acton has been so successful in his work for the Church. Regarding the doctrinal controversy at the recent mid-year meetings in Bryn Athyn, Pendleton writes, “Our opponents were reduced to the statement that we did not understand their teachings. This they persisted in to the last. It is difficult to argue with a person who contents himself with such a defense. Those here who, to some degree sympathize with them, took up this saying: They said, We do not know whether they are right ot [or] not, but we are convinced that you do not understand them. Some of these are very young and have very little knowledge of our theology. Also there are a few who appear to us to have an underlying cause, as evidenced by their former attitude of opposition to that which may be called the powers that be. Up to present I know of no outright converts in principle.” The papers and resulting discussions will soon be published in the Life, and Pendleton looks forward to hearing Tilson’s impressions. Names mentioned: Miss (Kate Madeline) Dowling, Wynne Acton
