Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Tilson’s letter was delivered to Pendleton’s camp at Indian Lake. Pendleton does not know who sent Tilson a packet of notes on the Ministers’ Meetings, but he will inform Tilson if he finds out. Pendleton is glad Tilson recommended a civil service to the couple in question. In answer to Tilson’s inquiry about whether a minster can truly know the internal religion of a couple he is marrying, Pendleton writes that a minster is only expected to judge by external appearances. Pendleton is pleased the Tilson was delighted with his address to the British Assembly, but disappointed that Tilson felt on reflection it was somewhat too non-committal from the head of the church. He writes, “It is true that the Bishop of the General Church, as such, has not as yet felt called upon to join issue with Mr. Pfeiffer. If and when he does, there will be a judgment. In the meantime, keep in mind the Lord’s parable concerning the wheat and the tares.” Pendleton notes Tilson’s statement that he and Mr. Buss have been dropped from the Council of the Swedenborg Society. He presumes from Tilson’s enclosure that the attitude of Mr. Bayley, and those with him, is responsible. Pendleton recommends that the Assembly Committee keep to the use for which it was formed. He will bring Tilson’s suggestion to the next Executive Committee meeting, but he reminds Tilson that times are though and both the Academy and the General Church have had to reduce their expenses. Names mentioned: Mr. (Albert) Bjorck, Mr. (Theodore) Pitcairn, Father (William Henry) Benade, (Emanuel) Swedenborg, Mr. (Ernst) Pfeiffer, Mr. Buss, Mr. Bayley
