Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton has received Tilson’s last letter with a report of the annual meeting of Michael Church. Pendleton is glad that Tilson approves of his suggested arrangement; He will write with more details after the matter has been discussed by the Executive Committee during the mid-year meetings. Mr. Caldwell has passed along Tilson’s letter with enclosed copy of a communication from the Convention Ministers’ Council to the Swedenborg Society regarding the “Translation and Annotation of Conjugial Love.” In response to the Krampf Will case, the Convention Ministers’ Council proposes publishing an annotated version of Conjugial Love “…to put some of its less intelligible statements into their proper background in the rest of the work and the Writings generally.” In discussing the need for an annotated version, they refer to “…the near presence of the Bryn Athyn Cathedral and the approbious [opprobrious?] name by which that organization is frequently cited.” Pendleton asks if he may make a copy of this letter for his records as “the day may come when it may be advisable to refer to it for proof.” He continues, “I have in mind the fact that Mr. Worchester, in the presence of several men, assured me that the communication of scandals against the Academy was no longer indulged in by the members of the Convention. Mr. Worchester is a gentleman, and I am convinced he would be not a little shocked if the “communication” came before him.” Names mentioned: Mr. (Will?) Caldwell, Swedenborg Society of London, Swedenborg Foundation of New York, Mr. Worcester, Krampf, Professor William F. Wunsch, Rotch, Mr. F. Bayley, Lippincotts, Louis G. Hoeck, H. Clinton Hay, Chas.
