Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson, 1931-03-23
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton was laid up in bed with the grippe when Tilson’s cable announcing the death of Mrs. Benade arrived. Pendleton reflects on his relationship to Mrs. Benade, writing, “Our affectionate remembrances of her will ever hold. To me, when a younger man, and when the weight of grave responsibilities fell upon me, she was always keenly sympathetic despite the former troubles with Father Benade. I have ever felt grateful for her generosity in this respect. Also, my admiration has gone out to her for her loyalty to the church of her love. Her passing leaves but a very few of the old time Academy group. Before long there will be no one on earth who remembers. Only a few and in part misleading documents will remain to tell the story of the Academy’s beginning and its early struggle for the right to live. May the blessing of the Lord follow her, and may she be rewarded by the fulness of His mercy.” Names mentioned: Mrs. (Mary Ann Katharine Gibbs) Benade, Father (William Henry) Benade
