Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. In response to Tilson’s letter of April 10th, Pendleton sends his regrets that Tilson will not attend the upcoming Assembly in Bryn Athyn. However, he understands that Tilson’s doctor has recommended against making the journey due to Tilson’s age. He comments, “The time comes when we must all begin to narrow the circle of our physical activities.” Rev. Pfeiffer has written to Pendleton for permission to distribute excerpts of his publication, De Hemelsche Leer, to the ministers and other leading members of the Church. In the interest of intellectual freedom, Pendleton gave permission, though he responded to Pfeiffer as follows: “’I presume you anticipate some difference of opinion with respect to them (the excerpts), and especially with reference to the values to be derived from expounding the literal sense of the Writings with a view to drawing forth their internal sense by the same mode which the Writings themselves employ in interpreting the internal meaning of the Old and New Testaments. . . My view is that the approach to and the mode of interpreting the successive revelations should be qualified by a recognition of the different planes of the mind to which those revelations are addresses.’” He concludes his letter to Tilson, writing, “It appears to me that the two positions are irreconcilable. The future will determine the issue.” Names mentioned: Mr. (Ernst) Pfeiffer
