Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton has received Tilson’s letters of May 23rd and 29th with an enclosed exchange between Tilson and Rev. W. H. Claxton. Pendleton comments on Claxton’s letter, “His bland assumption of the prerogative of giving platitudinous advice is as notable in his letter to you as it was on the occasion of the London Assembly.” In Bryn Athyn, Pendleton has been busy arranging for the schools’ closing. Immediately following the closing exercises, he and some friends traveled by automobile to Pittsburgh to witness the laying of the cornerstone of the new church building and adjoining community house there. The combined cost of these new constructions totals more than $100k, which Pendleton remarks is quite a sum to be raised by the Pittsburgh group. Pendleton answers Tilson’s questions and comments regarding Consistory business. Referring to the recent British Assembly, Pendleton regrets that Theta Alpha leadership caused some disturbance. He comments, “It is not, I think, out of order for these bodies to ask ministers to address them on a fitting occasion, but of course, these arrangements should not be allowed to interfere with the workings of the General body.” Provided all goes well, Pendleton looks forward to seeing Tilson in England on his return journey from South Africa. Names mentioned: Rev. W. H. Claxton, Mr. Acton, Theta Alpha, Sons (of the Academy)
