Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson, 1929-05-22
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton asks Tilson to convey his greetings to the 1929 British Assembly. He would like to be present in person, but his engagements on the European continent will prevent him from doing so. He plans to visit Paris, the Hague, and Thoury-Ferottes as he was unable to visit these places last summer. He promises to spend several days in England on his return journey from South Africa. He plans to hold the first General Church Assembly in South Africa while visiting Durban, which he hopes will be an occasion of great importance. He has read with interest Tilson’s account of his episcopal trip to Failsworth, Manchester, and York. He comments, “The claim that this or that person belongs to my Church, and that you should keep away from him, even though he invites you to his house as a guest, is an absurdity born of fear, lest your host be converted.” He continues, “Of course if the General Church was only an external division of the organized New Church, there would doubtless be some propriety in the claim of my field and thy filed. But we hold that the General Church embodies a new spirit and a new life, the imparting of which to all who will receive of it, is a supreme duty, which we owe to any and all who go by the name of New Churchmen.” Names mentioned: Mr. Dawson, Mr. (Will) Caldwell
