Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson, 1928-11-20
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton is happy to hear from Tilson now that the “storm” of the Assembly meetings has passed. He agrees with Tilson’s reflections, and he hopes that the Burton Road church will not meet the same fate as the Peckham Rye church. Pendleton is pleased that Tilson has added Mr. Anderson to his Council and Mr. Stebbing to his Board of Finance. He comments, “Sometimes a new infusion of blood is vitalizing.” The Board of Directors has authorized the payment of $225 each to Tilson and Miss Dowling from the Glanville bequest for the work they plan to do over the next year in the interest of New Church education. Pendleton appreciated the enclosed letters Tilson sent. Commenting on the letters from Mr. Sexton, Pendleton writes, “[He] betrays both the temperament and the temper that I anticipated. He objects strenuously to my man made rule, as if his man made rule was from God.” Pendleton promises that the Dawson and Sutton letters will be returned at a later date. Names mentioned: Mr. Anderson, Mr. Stebbing, Miss (Kate Madeline) Dowling, Glanville, Mr. Sexton (George Alexander Sexton?), Dawson, Sutton
