Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson, 1928-03-22
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton is sending Tilson a copy of his correspondence with Mr. and Mrs. White from years ago. He had hoped that Mrs. White would “cease from spreading scandal,” but it appears that she remains jealous due to the close friendship of her daughter with Mr. Morse and Miss Taylor. Pendleton agrees with Tilson on the impropriety of a man living with, and promising marriage to, another woman while his legal wife is still living, however he disagrees that Mrs. White has the right to demand an official statement from him as head of the General Church. He writes, “I felt that the best interests of the Church would be served by not taking up with the scandal, and so I, as politely as possible, threw the case out of court. You see, I had only a scandal-like rumor to go on, and this not from any of Mr. Morse’s own people.” Pendleton notes that several scandals have arisen lately against the Academy, and he wonders if there is a connection to the upcoming London General Assembly. Despite this possibility, he writes, “our best policy will be to hold that Assembly in a purely normal spirit, with no extra staging that may be taken as a challenge. Our Assembly, wherever held, meets for its own purposes, quite apart form propaganda.” Pendleton concludes the letter by informing Tilson that, in America, Mr. Iungerich will be leaving the College Department as he has been called to serve Pittsburgh. Names mentioned: Mr. (John?) White, Mrs. White, Mr. (Richard) Morse, Miss (Annie) Taylor, Mr. (Eldred) Iungerich
