Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton is unable to fully respond to Tilson’s letter of August 20th at this time but would like to acknowledge its receipt. Pendleton explains that the various boards only meet at certain intervals, and, even when they do meet, they sometimes struggle to decide financial matters. Pendleton currently has half a dozen requests for money which have yet to be dealt with. However, certain changes in recent years have made the disposition of finances a bit easier; Pendleton writes, “In the early days, we, of necessity, laid heavy accent upon the exclusive rights, prerogatives, the separation and distinction of the priesthood and its peculiar powers. The reaction was inevitable. The laymen, many of whom were strong men, said- where do we come in, Bishop Benade said you have supervision of the temporalities, i.e. the finances, -and so the laymen have ever since carefully guarded their especial responsibility. However, as of late years, we have affected a valuable adjustment, in that the Bishop now presides not only over the Board of Directors of the Academy, but also over the Executive Committee of the General Church. So I now hold a useful, strategic position with reference to the disposition of our finances.” Pendleton regrets the state of Tilson’s school, which he had hoped would continue indefinitely. The matter is especially disappointing as they had just reached a tentative agreement regarding the use of interest from the Glenville bequest. Pendleton would like to know if any action was taken at the last British Assembly to prepare for the upcoming General Assembly. They must now begin planning in earnest for the 1928 General Assembly. Names mentioned: Bishop (William Henery) Benade, Glanville
