Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson, 1927-04-01
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton has received Tilson’s letters of Feb. 23rd, Feb. 25th, March 8th, and March 11th with enclosures. He was distressed to learn of Mr. Misson’s unexpected death and Mrs. Urwick’s terminal illness. He writes, “It makes one feel old to see our friends one after another passing over. . . Well, you and I must face a new and younger world.” Pendleton is pleased that Tilson has made plans to visit Mr. Sexton on Jersey, and he looks forward to a report of conditions there. Pendleton notes Tilson’s news of the change in legal status of the London society, yet he does not fully understand the implications of this change as he is unfamiliar with English legal customs. The British district assembly will be held in London this year rather than Colchester, and Pendleton hopes this will not interfere with plans for the 1928 London General Assembly. Pendleton would like to finalize a date for the 1928 assembly as soon as possible. He favors the customary date of August 1st, with the Assembly encompassing two Sundays. He plans to perform several ordinations during the Assembly, including those of Tilson, Acton, Leonardos, and Lima. Tilson’s church building is too small to accommodate these ordinations, so Pendleton recommends Tilson find an assembly hall to rent for the occasion. Pendleton ends the letter by congratulating Tilson on his 70th birthday. Names mentioned: Miss Dowling (Kate Madeline Dowling?), Mr. (Ezekiel William) Misson, Mrs. Urwick, Rev. G. A. Sexton (George Alexander Sexton?), (Elmo) Acton, Mr. (Henry) Leonardos, Mr. (Joao de Mendonca) Lima
