Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton has been traveling nearly continuously for the last two months, and, as a result, his correspondence has fallen behind. He has just returned home from a series of meetings hosted in Pittsburgh by the Sons of the Academy. He has an unanswered letter from Gyllenhaal on his desk in which Gyllenhaal describes the final meeting of the Peckham Rye society and inquires about the upcoming British Assembly in London. Pendleton appoints Tilson President of the Assembly and Celebrant of the Holy Supper. Referring to the loss of Peckham Rye, Pendleton writes, “It lies somewhat heavily on my heart that the General Church in England has lost a member society, but there is consolation in the prospect of strengthening the other two societies. We must in all human affairs face at times apparent decrease in order that, in Providence, a larger expansion may follow, and if not this at least an improvement in state and quality should result. Beyond this we may not go in reasoning about such a matter. Better than reasoning is an attitude of confidence in the disposals of Providence and a simple trust that the Lord guides His Church to better ends than we can possibly foresee or prescribe.” Names mentioned: Mr. (Fred) Gyllenhaal
