Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson, 1922-02-16
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton has received Tilson’s letters of January 12th and 25th. News of Mr. Ottley’s death came as a shock. He will be greatly missed. Pendleton writes about Ottley, “Certainly he was of an erratic but at the same time a loveable disposition.” Pendleton reports that Tilson’s papers on “The Ultimates of Conjugial Love” and “Birth Control” were read aloud and well received by the Ministers’ Council in Bryn Athyn. Pendleton writes that the ministers “realized the need of some gentle modification of the old strict law, under certain conditions of human needs and weaknesses.” Mr. Homer Synnestvedt has borrowed the papers to present them to the Pittsburgh Philosophy Club. Referring to Tilson’s ideas on episcopal government, Pendleton comments, “As for myself, (and apropos of your views on church government) I am no democrat. This came out very clearly in some of our recent meetings here.” Pendleton will not take Tilson’s “present depressed view” of his work and the state of the Church seriously as Tilson has been through a lot recently. He was happy to learn of Mrs. Tilson’s improving condition, and he asks Tilson to send her and the Burton Road congregation his greetings. Names mentioned: Mr. (Glendower) Ottley, Mrs. Ottley, Homer Synnestvedt, Mrs. Tilson
