Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton has received Tilson’s letter of Feb. 8th. Plans have now been finalized for Pendleton’s upcoming Europe trip; He will travel in the company of Ora (Pendleton), Raymond Pitcairn, and the misses Creda and Winfrey Glenn. They will most likely stop in France first before traveling to London for the British Assembly in August. After the Assembly, Pendleton anticipates continuing on to visit New Church centers Sweden, Holland, etc. He suggests that General Church members from Stockholm, The Hague, Brussels, and Paris be invited to the Assembly as well to add a sense of “universal significance.” Tilson has inquired about the process by which congregations may apply to be accepted into the General Church. Pendleton responds that in the case of the Durban Society, the society was accepted into the General Church “with the proviso that after the date of its reception only those who were members of the General Church could be received into the Society.” Members who did not wish to join the General Church at the time of incorporation were allowed to remain with full rights and privileges. Pendleton has recently received a letter from Mrs. Jubb with reference to Rev. (Emil) Cronlund. He explains to Tilson, “It seems that there is indignation in some circles of both Conference and Convention because of our supposed treatment of Mr. Cronlund. It is truly amazing the way these people find causes for criticism of us. Many minsters in Conference and Convention have gone begging for work and have been forced to retire owing to the lack of a call, and yet they seem to think that we have or should have some sort of socialistic arrangement whereby ministers are supported from a central fund, whether engaged in work for the Church or not.” Rev. Cronlund’s resignation was called for by the Toronto Society after years of dissatisfaction with his work. Pendleton now hears the Cronlunds may move to Bryn Athyn to enroll their children in the Academy, and he feels sure Cronlund will be able to find either ecclesiastical or secular work. Names mentioned: Ora (Pendleton), Mr. Raymond Pitcairn, Miss Creda Glenn, Miss Winfrey Glenn, Mrs. (William Copley) Jubb (nee Ellen Shaw), Mr. (Emil) Cronlund, Mrs. (Mary Somerville) Cronlund, Mrs. Tilson, Rev. Lardge
