Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Robert J. Tilson in London, England. Pendleton neglected to inform Tilson in his last letter that Mr. Alden will supply him with any parts of the Liturgy he might want; Tilson should send Alden a statement of what he would like to have. Mr. Gyllenhaal has written Pendleton two long letters regarding his proposal to combine the Burton Road and Peckham Rye societies. To date, only several of the leading men of the Peckham Rye society have considered this proposal, but the outlook appears favorable. Pendleton comments, “It has seemed to me from the beginning that the union of the two societies would inevitably come about, in case Burton Road advanced to the point of becoming a society of the General Church. I, however, as Bishop, would desire that Burton Road should take this step, if it does so, in greatest freedom and in its own good time.” Pendleton is planning a trip to Europe this summer and would like to hold an assembly in London. He instructs Tilson to consult with Gyllenhaal to pick a suitable time and arrange the program of events. Pendleton’s one suggestion is that he, as the Bishop, should administer the Holy Supper following Sunday service. In Bryn Athyn, they have just completed an interesting series of meetings amongst the Consistory, Ministers’ Council, and Joint Council in conjunction with the District Assembly. Names mentioned: Mr. Alden, Mr. (Fred) Gyllenhaal
