Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Homer Synnestvedt in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Pendleton has received Synnestvedt’s last letter regarding his possible relocation to Toronto as the society’s new Pastor. Pendleton writes, “If your mind is interiorly made up to stay in Pittsburgh I do not see that there is any call for you to place yourself in a position to be persuaded to do what you think you ought not to do. In the matter of persuasion or rather non-persuasion I am an old fashioned Academy man.” He continues, “However, I think the congregational ideal is not best fitted to our order, that is, that a congregation should go out after a pastor of their liking and get him by either sending a delegation to see him, or inviting him to come for a time on trial, or what not. Among other things the process lacks dignity and if it developed among us would lead to all kinds of complications.” Pendleton adds a handwritten note after the letter which reads “I shall not communicate with Toronto until I receive your final answer.”
