Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Homer Synnestvedt in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Pendleton acknowledges receipt of Synnestvedt’s previous letters. He writes that they do not plan to employ Margaret Gyllenhaal as a teacher in Bryn Athyn next year unless Synnestvedt decides not to hire her for the Pittsburgh school. Pendleton discusses Synnestvedt’s reorganizational plan for his pastoral government. When Pendleton was pastor, the government functioned under one committee. He recognizes however that conditions have changed, and he approves of Synnestvedt’s plan to have one central committee with several sub-committees beneath it. In response to Synnestvedt’s question about how Pendleton’s recent letter to Raymond (Pitcairn?) was received, Pendleton writes, “I can say very little of the manner of reception on the part of laymen of my letter to Raymond, save that I have heard it favorably mentioned. But as far as I know, it has caused no excitement. It is difficult to excite Bryn Athyn. Also I think the Life is not read here as much as elsewhere.” Pendleton intends to send Otho (Heilman) to teachers’ college for a course over the summer focusing on primary grades; He does not yet know what Otho’s position will be in the elementary school next year. Pendleton has not had time to look up the numbers Synnestvedt sent him concerning the glorified body of the Lord, but he remembers that the “vessels said to be glorified” are often defined as truths in the Writings. Lastly, Pendleton agrees that Swedenborg’s letter to Oetinger seems to confirm the substantial nature of the bodies of spirits and angels. Names mentioned: Margaret Gyllenhaal, Mr. (George) Macbeth, Raymond (Pitcairn?), Otho (Heilman), (Friedrich Christoph) Oetinger
