Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Homer Synnestvedt , 1915-09-21
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Homer Synnestvedt in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Pendleton acknowledges Synnestvedt’s letter of the 18th and approves of the program that Synnestvedt has outlined within. Pendleton no longer has the address he delivered at the opening of the schools; Mr. Whitehead requested it for publication in The New Philosophy Journal. Pendleton may decide to deliver it again regardless. He gives Synnestvedt a brief outline of the paper. He writes, “I refer to the confusion of thought now prevailing on the subject of higher New Church education as developed amongst us. Then to the periodic judgements that come upon the intellectual structures built by the men of the Church, and to the need of preserving all the truth in such formations; let the truth not be rejected because of its association with the non-true. Then I speak of the need in educational work of correlating the truths of revelation with scientifics, this not to be forbidden but encouraged. However, supreme importance must be given to the affirmation of revealed truth, and this if need be, in the face of science. Yet the Doctrine is clear that scientifics must be joined to the truths of faith, but we must guard against the over-rule of the sciences lest faith be destroyed, etc. The Church is not to be established by science, but primarily by a spiritual faith on its own ground.” Names mentioned: Mr. (John) Whitehead, Mrs. (Theodora Bellinger) Synnestvedt
