Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Homer Synnestvedt in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Pendleton acknowledges Synnestvedt’s last two letters. Synnestvedt has recently taken up the Pastorate of the Pittsburgh Society, and Pendleton thinks he will be at an advantage having prior knowledge of the society’s particular problems. In Bryn Athyn, Pendleton is settling into his new position and beginning to feel more at ease. Pendleton informs Synnestvedt that he returned Irene’s letter by yesterday’s post; He does not understand the full story, but he feels confirmed “in the feeling that our not yielding to Mr. Macbeth’s first choice [of pastor] was of Providence, and for the good of the Pittsburgh Society. . .” He feels that Gilbert (Smith?) would not have been up to the job of Pittsburgh’s pastor. Finally, he discusses the matter of a certain couch which Synnestvedt has inquired about. He writes, “No, Homer, I can not recall having said or heard anything about a ‘couch’ in the Church building. I can evoke no such vision from the subconscious depths of my mind; and so far as I know, there is no such vision there to be called up. However, in such matters I always give the other party the benefit of the doubt, since my powers of forgetting are highly developed.” Names mentioned: Irene (Bellinger Farrington?), Mr. (George A.) Macbeth, Gilbert (Smith?)
