Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gilbert Haven Smith, 1929-04-04
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gilbert Haven Smith in Glenview, IL, USA. Pendleton acknowledges receipt of Smith’s letter of March 12th along with the book Elements of Hebrew by Jewish Rabbi Philip Steinbuck. Pendleton is curious about the results of Smith’s contact with Steinbuck, whether the New Church teachings make a deep impression on him. Raymond Pitcairn met Steinbuck sometime ago in the Cathedral, but he only remembers a vague impression of him. Pendleton is glad to hear things are going well in Glenview, and he wishes he could say the same of Bryn Athyn. He hopes Bryn Athyn has now passed through the worst of the controversy surrounding the proposed new Assembly Hall. Commenting on the situation he writes, “They tell me that Kitchener now has the laugh on us, and is quite conscious of the fact.” Pendleton attended the funeral of Mrs. Potts yesterday. He writes, “She certainly was a remarkable personality. I am told that she maintained her customary clarity of thought up to the last.” Names mentioned: Philip Steinbuck, Raymond Pitcairn, Mrs. Potts
