Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gilbert Haven Smith, 1927-05-10
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gilbert Haven Smith in Glenview, IL, USA. Pendleton regrets Smith’s choice not to attend the 1928 General Assembly in London and hopes this decision is not final. He writes, “At times the Church calls to us for a high idealism and an extraordinary effort. While I would not attempt to persuade you against your will, yet I am convinced that your real will is to go, and that the things standing in the way may prove removable.” He has already suggested to Alvin Nelson that the Glenview Society should assist Smith financially, and Nelson agreed. He offers to write to Nelson again on Smith’s behalf to remind him. He also suggests that they might find someone to assist Mrs. Smith with family matters while Smith is away. Pendleton thinks Smith ought to put off making a final decision at this time. Hendrick Boef will be free to come to Glenview for his summer assignment as soon as the school year is over. Pendleton is looking forward to making at least one auto trip over the summer, and he thanks Smith for his suggestion to travel by way of Dorset. Names mentioned: Mrs. (Nora Potts) Smith, Alvin Nelson, (Hendrick) Boef
