Letter from N.D. Pendleton (via Karl Alden) to Rev. Gilbert Haven Smith, 1926-09-23
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton (via Karl Alden, Boys School Principal) to Rev. Gilbert Haven Smith in Glenview, IL, USA. Alden has been asked by the Bishop to communicate with Smith regarding the academic standing of his son, Gerardin, and what it means for his scholarship. Gerardin has forfeited his scholarship by failing to pass his re-examination in Latin. However, he will be given a couple months to tutor and then take the test again. Should he pass, he will be granted another scholarship immediately, provided that one is available. Commenting on this plan, Alden writes, “My personal opinion is that this will do Gerardin a world of good. Last year he was very immature, and could not take anything very seriously. This year, since his defeat, he has squared his jaw, and told me that he is going to graduate. Already Mr. Iungerich tells me he is working with new purpose in his course. And it looks to me as if it would awaken the real boy, which you and we alike want to see developed. On the other hand if we violated our rule and let him stay on having failed his exam he would feel that he could keep on taking it easy and nothing would ever happen.” Addressing the rumors of cheating on last year’s final exam, Alden writes, “. . .I took it up with his class, and it seems that boys who were very willing to confess their sins to you, indignantly denied having cheated to me. . . Mr. Iungerich did everything in his power to prevent cheating, even giving each boy an individual examination. He was present in the room the whole time. What more could we do? I feel that boys in the gay sphere of an Assembly are liable to slightly exaggerate their ability to slip one over on the school.” Names mentioned: Gerardin (Smith), Mr. (Eldred) Iungerich
