Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gilbert Haven Smith, 1917-01-12
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gilbert Haven Smith in Glenview, IL, USA. Pendleton was distressed to hear of Will Caldwell’s illness but glad that his wife Korene and their children have remained healthy so far. Pendleton will write to Caldwell in a few days, and he will mention Smith’s offer to carry on Caldwell’s work while he is recovering. Pendleton notes with satisfaction Smith’s renewed optimism regarding the Sharron Church. Pendleton comments, “The real problem for a society, as for a man, is to keep alive spiritually, and where there is life there is growth. The evidence of growth in the Sharon Church is clear from what you say.” Referring to the matter of the Kenwood Society, Mr. Billings, and Mrs. Bishop, Pendleton writes, “. . .I can of course express no opinion. It does appear, however, from many indications that a number of New Church societies are disintegrating. This is sad, but I fear true. There is but one cure, intense loyalty and entire devotion to the spirit and principles of the revelation given to us.” Pendleton ends the letter noting, “To-day we celebrate the Twelfth for the first time.” Names mentioned: Will Caldwell, Korene (Pendleton Caldwell), Mr. (Percy?) Billings, Mrs. (L. Brackett) Bishop
