Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Enoch Spradling Price, 1899-03-08
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Enoch Spradling Price. Pendleton has received Price’s note of congratulations (presumably congratulations for Pendleton’s engagement to Miss Beatrice Childs). Pendleton writes, “I have always loved you my friend but the knowledge that you have always admired Beatrice adds to my love for you. This I can say without in the least discrediting my past affection for you.” He continues, “Yes, yes, I shall improve in every direction (horrible dictu. I shall be known as saint Dandridge yet.) However as Cato would say ‘this is a great occasion and we should celebrate” and we will in the ‘buenna ventura.’ You say ‘it’s just good enough for you’ (me). Well, well, old man you are not strictly in accord with well known facts, but I thank you for the sentiment nevertheless. It may be that you are a bit biased by the ‘Auld lang sine.’ But that’s an amiable weakness, and often adds a sweetness to life in this rough old world.” Pendleton concludes the letter by thanking Price and his wife for sending their love and asking Price to convey Pendleton’s love in return. Names mentioned: Beatrice (Beatrice Walton Childs Pendleton), Cato, Lily (Lily Ottilia Waelchli Price)
