Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Theodore Pitcairn, 1934-06-09
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Theodore Pitcairn in Bryn Athyn, PA, USA. Text: “I can not at this time comment on the various criticisms, direct and implied in your recent communication. I must, however, repudiate the interpretation you placed upon the advice I gave to the pastor of the Kitchener Society. I am in agreement with much that you say about freedom of speech and the value of opposing parties in maintaining a balance, as exemplified in countries such as ours. However, one quite important phase of such governments you did not consider, namely, that it is taken for granted that a Cabinet Minister or any leading member of the administration will sustain his chief, at least so far as the public is concerned, as long as the minister retains his official place, or as long as the head of the government continues in office.”
