Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Theodore Pitcairn in Chateau les Pleignes, Grez sur Loing, Seine-et-Marne, France. Pendleton has received Pitcairn’s letter with enclosed exchange between him and Moffat (Mcanyana). Pendleton does not entirely understand Moffatt’s complaints, but he understands the Moffat is unhappy and would like to return to Durban where he is more qualified for the work. Pendleton thinks Pitcairn answered Moffatt wisely, and he wonders how Mr. Elphick and Elmo (Acton) would regard Moffat’s request. Pendleton will make inquires with Elphick. In Bryn Athyn, the mid-year meetings have successfully concluded. Most of the discussion was about the state of the Church and about the question of inter-faith marriages. Of the marriage question, Pendleton writes, “I brought the matter up because of the apparent increase of marriages out of the church; and my feeling was that we should cultivate a keener sense of our responsibility. I can not agree that a minister has no responsibility in such cases, but hold that he has a right to refuse, (and in my thought for myself, the necessity of refusing) in case he is convinced that the two who present themselves for marriage are in fact and state, of different religions. Certainly, as we know, the Writings severely condemn such marriages.” Names mentioned: Moffat (Bontyisi Mcanyana), Mr. Elphick, Elmo (Acton)
