Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Theodore Pitcairn in Durban, Natal, South Africa. Pendleton wonders if former theological school student John Jiyana has arrived in South Africa yet. Jiyana was sent home without first being ordained, as Pendleton was “not satisfied with his state.” Pendleton himself has recently returned from a meeting of the Sons of the Academy in Pittsburgh. He remarks, “Certainly the ‘Sons’ are coming on fast. They represent a somewhat new and very interesting development in our Church life.” Pendleton reports that the Bryn Athyn Cathedral has begun offering missionary services on Sunday afternoons. He expresses some concern about the results of these missionary efforts, writing, “However our greatest problem is to make over the new comers to Bryn Athyn into genuine Academy New Churchmen. We now have them in almost every single stage of development. Some of them give George no little concern. This is an attractive place to live, and I have no doubt that we shall continually have our hands full converting the new element. Well that is our job, so to speak, and we must do the best we may. Sometimes I am haunted by the idea that in the long run they will be too much for us. Nothing could be better for us than a little new blood of the right sort. But this is the question, is the blood spiritual or capable of a spiritual development.” Pendleton hopes to see Pitcairn in June for the next Assembly. Names mentioned: John Jiyana, Karl Alden, Mr. Whitehead, George (DeCharms)
