Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Theodore Pitcairn, 1925-02-20
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Theodore Pitcairn. Pendleton received Pitcairn’s recent note with enclosed letter to South African theolog John Jiyana. Pendleton has not read the article Pitcairn references, and only Mr. Elphick even knows of the paper in which it was published. Pendleton comments, “John is something of a problem, he has a rather fresh aggressive manner, but on the other hand is the best informed negro as to the Doctrines I have come in contact with.” Under normal circumstances, Jiyana would be ordained and sent back to South Africa at the end of the school year. However, Pendleton is waiting to see how things develop with the article before making a decision. Pendleton has received a response from George DeCharms with reference to Pitcairn’s suggestion that DeCharms visit South Africa for a year; Under different circumstances, DeCharms would be glad to accept Pitcairn’s invitation, but he feels that he is beginning to recover from his prolonged illness is eager to return to his work in Bryn Athyn. In DeCharms’ absence, Pendleton has come to rely on the support of Alan Gill and is very glad that he was not the one sent to Durban. Pendleton has just turned 60. He writes, “Yesterday I was sixty and received a visit from the Elementary School children. Can it be possible that I am old?” Names mentioned: John (Jiyana), Mr. Elphick, George DeCharms, Alan Gill, Elmo (Acton)
