Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Theodore Pitcairn, 1924-12-30
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Theodore Pitcairn in Durban, Natal, South Africa. Pendleton has received Pitcairn’s letter of Dec. 11th. Pendleton originally suggested sending Alan Gill to South Africa as Pitcairn’s assistant, but he now sees that whoever is sent to assist will likely become the next Durban society pastor. With this in mind, Pendleton discusses several potential candidates for the position, including Alan Gill, Elmo Acton, Fred Gyllenhaal and Reginald Brown. If the Durban society decides they only want a minister at this time, Pendleton will suggest Gill and Acton. If they want a pastor, Pendleton will suggest Gyllenhaal and Brown. Pendleton asks Pitcairn to send a cable with the society’s decision as soon as they have made it. In Bryn Athyn, the theological school faculty has been discussing what to do with their two African students, John Jiyana and Jonas Mphatse. Pendleton’s opinion is that Jiyana should return to Africa at the end of the school year, and that Mphatse should remain in school for another year. Pendleton reports that George DeCharms has been ill with “the grip” for about a month, and there is talk of him going south to recover. Pendleton writes, “I am seriously concerned about him. He is my right arm in the Church work here, if not something more.”
