Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Theodore Pitcairn in Maseru, Basutoland. Pendleton acknowledges Pitcairn’s letter of Jan 28th. Pendleton is unsure of when Pitcairn intends departing South Africa for his visit to Bryn Athyn, and he wonders if this letter will arrive in time. Pendleton writes that John Jiyana will be welcomed at the theological school next year, but he suggests that Jiyana will need special housing accommodations outside the dormitory. Pendleton thinks Pitcairn made the correct decision regarding Mofokeng. Pendleton always found Mofokeng to be unreliable and “by disposition insubordinate.” High enrollment in the Academy schools this year has resulted in disciplinary issues; Two men have been dismissed from the college for poor academic performance and two high school boys have been asked to leave for insubordination. Pendleton remarks, “We had a hectic time for a while but now the atmosphere has cleared and we shall have more willing obedience.” Names mentioned: John Jiyana, Maqelepo, (Rev. Samuel Mabina) Mofokeng, George Mokoena
