Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Theodore Pitcairn in Maseru, Basutoland. Pendleton received Pitcairn’s letter of Dec. 27th in time for it to be read aloud at the ministers’ council. Pendleton looks forward to Pitcairn’s visit in June; He writes, “I wish you had a flying machine for the return journey. However, for myself, I lack ambition in that respect.” In the Academy schools, the recent expulsion of two college men and probation of three high school boys has helped with “tightening up” before the end of the school year. Pendleton comments, “The College boys are now working like little beavers and the Academy boys realize that they cannot ‘get away with it’. About this time every year, of late years, we come to judgement, as it were.” Pendleton asks Pitcairn to let him know when Mofokeng leaves the General Church so that his name can be dropped from the roll of ministers. Pendleton explains that he was never certain about Mofokeng, but he ordained him because he was not sure if he would ever be in South Africa again and he felt compelled by Providence. Fred (Gyllenhaal) is concerned about Pitcairn’s decision regarding the baptism of those living in polygamy. Pendleton has written to Gyllenhaal, explaining that the matter was carefully considered, and that the Church’s doctrine is clearly against mixing polygamy with Christianity. Names mentioned: (Rev. Samuel Mabina) Mofokeng, Fred (Gyllenhaal)
