Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Theodore Pitcairn in Maseru, Basutoland, South Africa. Pendleton responds to Pitcairn’s letter of Oct. 5th. He has yet to hear from the Brabys regarding Viola (Heath?) and their search for a governess in Durban. Pendleton has heard that Kenneth and Doris Ridgway will soon depart for Bryn Athyn to attend school at the Academy. Pendleton has received word from Mr. Brown that he fully intends returning to teach at the Academy next year. Some think it would be more advantageous to the work of the Church if Brown were to remain in Basutoland, and Pendleton suggests Pitcairn might try convincing him to stay. Pendleton updates Pitcairn on the progress of Basuto theological student George Mokoena; He writes, “. . .this year I am much pleased with him. In my class at least he is wide awake. He asks interested questions which show clearly a definite grasp of the subject in hand . . . If we are to make an intelligent minister of him it will be necessary for him to stay here another year besides this.” Pendleton notes that Emil Cronlund is no longer pastor of the Toronto Society, and he wonders if Pitcairn can use him in South Africa. He also suggests Mr. Rose for this same position, as there will likely not be a place for him elsewhere in the Church once he is ordained. Pendleton writes of Rose, “His mind is altogether too fixed for any reconstruction. His idiosyncrasies are such that he would not be a successful pastor in this country . . . Nonetheless he is an a very earnest New Churchman and filled to the brim with missionary zeal.” Pitcairn notes that Hugo (Odhner) and his family will be arriving in South Africa sometime in January, at which time Odhner will assume his position as Durban Society Pastor. Names mentioned: Mr. Braby, Mrs. Braby, Viola (Heath Ridgway?), Kenneth Ridgway, Doris (Ridgway), Norman (Ridgway), Mr. Henry Ridgway, Mrs. Henry Ridgway, Mr. (Reginald) Brown, (George) Mokoena, Mr. Acton, Mr. (Frank Hodson?) Rose, Hugo (Odhner), Emil Cronlund
