Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Ernst Pfeiffer, 1931-03-21

 Item
Identifier: RG.004.01

Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Ernst Pfeiffer in The Hague, Holland. Pendleton thanks Pfeiffer for the birthday wishes and congratulates him on the birth of his daughter. Mr. Odhner has written an unfavorable review of the doctrinal ideas put forth in De Hemelsche Leer. Pendleton is displeased with statements made regarding Odhner’s article during the most recent meeting of The Swedenborg Gezelschap. He writes, “What the Gezelschap speakers have said with reference to his having missed the true spirit of De Hemelsche Leer will, I have no doubt, receive his careful consideration; but as one who enjoys exceptionally close relations with him I cannot pass without comment the characterization of his review by one of the speakers, and somewhat more drastically reaffirmed by yourself. In my opinion it cannot, either with justice or with propriety in the use of words, be said that his review is ‘nothing but a course personal abuse.’. . .I can only interpret this characterization with any reasonable or sympathetic understanding by regarding it as a hasty expression of temporary resentment, and this, if you allow, I shall willingly do.” Names mentioned: Mrs. Pfeiffer, Mrs. (Beatrice Walton Childs) Pendleton, Mr. Odhner
