Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Ernst Pfeiffer in The Hague, Holland. Pendleton discusses the contents of Pfeiffer’s magazine and whether it may be distributed within the Church. He writes, “There is to my mind no reason why you should not send copies of the excerpts from your magazine to the ministers, or to any others who may wish to read them. I presume you anticipate some difference of opinion with respect to them, and especially with reference to the values to be derived from expounding the literal sense of the Writings with a view to drawing forth their internal sense by the same mode which the Writings themselves employ in interpreting the internal meaning of the Old and New Testaments. . . My view is that the approach to and mode of interpreting the successive revelations should be qualified by a recognition of the different planes of the mind to which those revelations are addressed.”
