Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Bishop William F. Pendleton
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from N.D. Pendleton to Bishop William F. Pendleton. No Date. Over the last few days, Pendleton has been questioned repeatedly whether still born children are “gifted with immortality.” Pendleton has been unable to answer this question, and he wonders if W.F.P. has thoughts on the issue. He writes, “I am aware of the position held by Bishop Benade, but some doubt was cast on it in my mind several years ago by considering certain apparent analogies which the state of life of the men of the Most Ancient Church affords to that of faetal (fetal?) life. This doubt was perhaps given a little freer range by hearing recently that Mrs. Starkey had written to Pittsburgh expressing her joy that it was now know that unborn children were immortal. During the past few days I have been earnestly seeking for some sign from the Writings that this view is the correct one, for my sympathies were enlisted on that side. But after reading Divine Wisdom I fail to see how we can escape from the Bishop’s view.” Names mentioned: Bishop (William Henry) Benade, Mrs. Starkey, Luelle (Pendleton Caldwell)
