Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from N.D. Pendleton to Bishop William F. Pendleton. La Have hotel letterhead. Pendleton and his wife, Beatrice, arrived in the Hague two nights ago. They will dine with the Barger family tonight, and afterwards, there will be a gathering of all interested members, including Alfred (Stroh), Mr. Pitcairn, Mr. Deltenre, Mr. Gardiner, and two ladies from the Stockholm Circle. Tomorrow, Pendleton will administer Holy Supper to the community and then attend meetings at the Barger house. Pendleton discusses Mr. Rosenquist and his application for reinstatement as a General Church minister. Pendleton writes, “I favor his reinstatement- on two grounds- First, I think he has been under a cloud, for which he was not altogether responsible, but that he is now clear, and will hereafter remain firm. Certainly he sincerely regrets the past, and is strong for the Academy.” Pendleton reports that the conclusion of his time in Stockholm was impactful; He was very impressed with the results of Alfred Stroh’s work there. Stroh is strongly considering taking up priestly work. Although Pendleton and Stroh disagree on several matters, Pendleton has enjoyed getting to know Stroh. He writes, “. . . I think he is a man of honestly and courage – and I have come not only to respect, but also to like him.” Pendleton’s daughter, Ora, has sent several worrying letters from home to Pendleton and Beatrice; Pendleton asks W.F.P. to act in his and Beatrice’s place if the need arises. Names mentioned: Barger family, (Gerrit) Barger, Alfred (Stroh), Beatrice (Walton Childs Pendleton), Mr. (John) Pitcairn, Mr. (Ernst) Deltenre, Mr. (Frederick Ambrose?) Gardiner, (Joseph Elias) Rosenquist, Ora (Pendleton)
