Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Bishop William F. Pendleton, 1913-08-13
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from N.D. Pendleton to Bishop William F. Pendleton. Pendleton and his wife spent three days with the New Church people of Copenhagen. They attended Sunday service at Mr. Bronniche’s Church and met the congregation. Pendleton relays the specifics of the order of service used. Pendleton judges Bronniche’s philosophical position to be intermediate, somewhere between Academy principles and the rest of the Church. From Copenhagen, Pendleton and Beatrice travelled to Gothenburg where they met with Mr. Rosenquist and two of his congregants. Of the situation on Gothenburg, Pendleton writes, “Just the day before we came to Gothenburg, the society passed through a crisis, which looks very much like a separation . . . However, most of the active men and leaders are for Mr. R. and they it seems are ready for an out and out stand for Academy principles.” Mr. Manby recently came to Gothenburg to resolve the situation, but ended up concluding that they should wait for Pendleton’s visit. Pendleton advises, “The recognition of Mr. Rosenquist as one of us is or will be vital to the situation” in Gothenburg. Pendleton and Beatrice are now in Stockholm, awaiting a meeting of the New Church in the North. Pendleton tells W.F.P. to take the Gota Canal trip next time he is in Sweden. Names mentioned: (Soren Christian) Bronniche, Alfred (Stroh), (Joseph Elias) Rosenquist, Mr. (Christian?) Bromberg, Mr. (George Edward) Lundin, Mr. (Carl Johan Nilsson) Manby, Beatrice (Walton Childs Pendleton)
