Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from N.D. Pendleton to Bishop William F. Pendleton. Kingsley Hotel letterhead. Pendleton has received W.F.P.’s letter of July 10th and also a copy of W.F.P.’s letter to Mr. Rosenquist. Pendleton will see Rosenquist in Stockholm and possibly also in Gothenburg. Alfred Stroh reports that Rosenquist holds Academy views and has been carrying out good work for the Church. If this proves true, Pendleton believes the Church ought to support him. Stroh has been preparing for the meeting of the “New Church in the North” which will be held in Stockholm mid-August. Pendleton and his wife dined last week with the Spaldings and Mr. and Mrs. Buss. They discussed New Church scientific and philosophical developments and also the Writings as the Word. Pendleton writes that “there was much complaint about the Life, its mode and manners of utterance- Especially the way in which it commented upon Mr. Stroh’s recent article by appending critical footnotes.” However, Pendleton believes the night was useful overall; He writes, “Certainly the Quarterly movement represents a gathering together of sounder elements in Conference- an (?) element which it seems is disposed to treasure and draw upon Academy principles and traditions, up to a certain date.” Pendleton and his wife travelled to Colchester over the weekend and were entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Gill. After returning to London, Pendleton met with Mr. Czerny, Mr. Stroh, and Mr. Hyde. They discussed again the Writings as the Word and also criticisms of the Life. Pendleton comments, “I am made to feel that open and frank criticism- the need of it- is as great as ever. . . the continued good health of the Academy itself requires it.” When this leg of the trip is completed, Pendleton and his wife will sail for Sweden.
