Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Bishop William F. Pendleton, 1913-07-19
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from N.D. Pendleton to Bishop William F. Pendleton. Kingsley Hotel letterhead. Pendleton and his wife have now arrived in London. Beatrice is recovering from her illness, and Pendleton thinks she will be herself again soon. Mr. Czerny met them at the station and accompanied them to the hotel. Pendleton was introduced to many London-based New Church members at a children’s social. He comments, “There appears to be a warmly enthusiastic state with the young people here. Just what one would look for as a result of Mr. Czerny’s work.” Pendleton will preach in London the next two Sundays before departing for Colchester. While in London, Pendleton plans to meet with Mr. Buss, Mr. Schreck, and other Conference ministers. Pendleton has been working closely with Alfred Stroh; Stroh “is enthusiastic about a proposed meeting in Stockholm of all who are interested in the New Church in the North,” and is now making arrangements. Pendleton writes, “It appears to be of providence that Alfred is here at this time, as he will be of great help in bringing me into connection with persons and conditions which otherwise I should probably miss.” Pendleton is glad Mr. Pitcairn gave him $200 in New York; Everything in Europe is more expensive than Pendleton anticipated, and, due to Beatrice’s illness, they will now be in Europe an extra 17 days. If his money runs out during the trip, Pendleton may be forced to ask the Church for a temporary loan. Names mentioned: Beatrice (Walton Childs Pendleton), Mr. (Andrew) Czerny, Alfred Stroh, William Henry (Acton), Mrs. (Susan Aitken) Acton, (John Howard) Spalding, (Charles) Higham, Mr. (James Frederick) Buss, Mr. (Eugene Joseph Emanuel) Schreck (?), (Joseph Elias?)
