Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from N.D. Pendleton to Bishop William F. Pendleton. At their last council meeting, Pendleton presented a report showing that church offerings have decreased by $10 per month over the last six months compared to the previous year. The Manse and the Club house are badly in need money for repairs, and the school is behind in paying Miss Hanlin’s and Mr. Klein’s salaries. Pendleton comments, “The situation, though not altogether unusual with us, proved to be somewhat discouraging. Several complained that the strain had lasted too long and was becoming too great. P.S. (Paul Synnestvedt) said he was unwilling to continue ‘doing the business in this way.’” The council discussed whether the society could continue to support both Pendleton as Glenview Society Pastor and Mr. Klein as school headmaster. It was suggested that one man could serve as both pastor and headmaster to save money, but it was thought that both jobs could not be completed satisfactorily by one person. Several influential council members thought that headmaster position should take priority, as they would not be willing to live in Glenview without a proper school for their children. Pendleton suggested that the council reconvene at a later date without Mr. Klein and himself present, as this would allow for a more free discussion of the matter. Pendleton promises to update W.F.P. as soon as the council reaches a decision. The second half of the letter is dated March 19th. The council met again and decided to continue attempting to support both positions for now; Both Pendleton and Klein were deemed irreplaceable. Pendleton remarks on the matter, “It is my opinion that if either Mr. Klein or myself were offered a position elsewhere, the discussion of the relative importance of the Church and school would cease forthwith. It is a hard thing, for men as well disposed as those of this Church, to cut a man adrift. . . I should be disturbed indeed if I thought that any considerable number so undervalued the Church as to make it a mere side issue to the school.” Names mentioned: Mr. Maynard, Paul Synnestvedt. Miss (Clara) Hanlin, Mr. (David H.) Klein, Alvin (Nelson), Seymour (Nelson), H.L.B., Mr. Burnham, Harry Blackman
