Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Glendower C. Ottley
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Glendower C. Ottley. "Hotel Edward" stationary. No Date. Typed copy by Freda Pendleton attached. On his return to Durban from Basutoland, Pendleton received Ottley’s letters of Feb. 8th and March 6th. In Basutoland, Pendleton baptized 20 “natives” and ordained 4. Pendleton discusses Mr. Tilson’s independent New Church society and what would happen to it if he died. Pendleton believes it will ultimately join either the Conference Church or the General Church. Pendleton agrees with Ottley that they should make efforts to keep the society together, but the issue of nationalism arises when considering the incorporation of the society into the General Church; According to Pendleton, Tilson recently made a statement at a meeting in London that the Church in England could never be ruled from America. Tilson quoted Bishop Benade to support his statement, but Pendleton disagrees that the quote used represents Benade’s overall views on the subject. Pendleton believes Church organization should be a matter of service, not of ruling. Pendleton will present Ottley’s financial plan to the Board of Directors as soon as possible. Pendleton reports that while in Durban, he incorporated the Durban Society into the General Church at the request of the members. Pendleton is currently unsure how or when he will be able to return to America as all the ways home are currently blocked. Names mentioned: Mr. (Robert J.) Tilson, Father (William Henry) Benade
