Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Hugo Odhner in Bryn Athyn, PA, USA. Typed by V.W.R. (Viola Wolcott Rennels). Pendleton comments on Odhner’s review of Mrs. Block’s history of the Church. Regarding Odhner’s remarks on past articles written by Rev. Schreck in the New Church Life, Pendleton writes, “Our church policy has been one of non-repudiation, as you know; also of non-comment. You touch gracefully upon the matter; yet I feel that it will be taken as an indication of retreat, or at least a modification of the Academy attitude. The simple fact is that the church stands by what you have characterized in your note to me as Mr. Schreck’s “fighting ground.” On the other hand, some at the time, practically all of us now, deplore his taste in discussing possible applications. These could not but give offence. Indeed, I regard his treatment of the subject as not only in bad form, but as illegitimate.” If the time has come for the Church to make an official statement on the matter, Pendleton believes it should be done “frankly and specifically” rather than by implication as in Odhner’s comments. Names mentioned: Mrs. (Marguerite Beck) Block, Mr. (Eugene Joseph Emanuel) Schreck, Connie (Constance Waelchli Odhner)
