Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Hugo Odhner in Durban, Natal, South Africa. Pendleton acknowledges Odhner’s letter of August 20th containing an account of the reconciliation of the Brabys and the Forfars. Pendleton comments, “Bitter personal quarrels have been the bane of the Church, this in spite of the doctrine of charity. However, our purpose is intense and our numbers small. This condition is apt to make for exaggerations of some things otherwise small in our personal relations.” Pendleton was pleased to hear of the opening of the “Kainon High School” in Durban. Miss Champion’s letter to Miss Grant regarding the school opening conveys enthusiasm and devotion. Pendleton reports that the Kitchener Society has offered to host the 1923 General Assembly, however, some feel it should be hosted in Bryn Athyn as it will be the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Academy. Pendleton presumes the Ridgways will have arrived back in Durban from Bryn Athyn by the time this letter reaches Odhner. Pendleton writes, “You might also tell them (the Ridgways) that my family and others are accusing me of ‘speeding’ altogether too fast for a beginner, and especially an old man. Certainly I am enjoying my new Buick. . .” Names mentioned: Braby, Forfar, Miss (Elsie M.) Champion, Miss (Alice?) Grant, the Ridgways, Connie (Constance Waelchli Odhner)
